Flying with children: the low-stress checklist

A practical sequence for family seating, airport security, carry-ons, delays, and the first hour after landing.

What this guide is

This combines current federal guidance with a practical family workflow. Airline commitments and security procedures can change, so verify the official pages before departure.

Handle seating before airport day

Review the airline’s family-seating policy before purchasing and select seats when possible. Recheck the reservation after schedule or aircraft changes. If seats separate your family, contact the airline before travel and ask the gate agent early rather than waiting until boarding.

Build one essential carry-on

Keep identification, required medicine, valuables, chargers, a full change of clothes, basic toiletries, snacks, and one comfort item where an adult can reach them. Pack for a delay, not just the scheduled flight time.

Know the child-specific security rules

Children 12 and under may remain with an accompanying adult in the standard screening line. Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and baby or toddler food can be allowed in quantities above the normal liquid limit, but they must be presented for separate screening. Tell the officer what you are carrying.

Give airport day more margin

Add time for bathroom stops, stroller handling, food, and a slower walk to the gate. Use the restroom before boarding and refill water after security. Keep one adult responsible for documents while the other manages bags and the child.

Plan the landing before takeoff

Save the hotel address, ground-transport instructions, and reservation number offline. Decide which adult will collect bags and which will stay with the child. The trip feels easier when the first hour after landing already has a script.
