The 30-day family departure countdown

A week-by-week sequence for documents, reservations, health preparation, packing, home tasks, and a calmer final day.

30 days out: verify the trip

Check names, dates, passport validity, entry rules, reservations, cabin or room details, and transportation between each stage. Review cancellation deadlines while there is still time to make changes.

Three weeks out: solve the hard items

Handle prescription refills, destination health needs, child-travel consent documents, pet care, airport parking, transfers, and any special equipment. Confirm excursions and their meeting instructions.

Two weeks out: build the working lists

Create the itinerary-based packing list, a shared family list, and a personal list for each traveler. Download carrier apps, save reservation details offline, and tell banks about travel only if they still request it.

One week out: recheck changeable rules

Review weather, airline or cruise alerts, baggage rules, destination requirements, and ground transportation. Make document copies and share the itinerary and emergency contacts with a trusted person.

48 hours out: move into travel mode

Complete online check-in when available, charge devices, download entertainment and maps, pack medicine and documents in the carry-on, and photograph checked bags. Finish laundry and remove anything that was packed only out of anxiety.

Departure day: protect the essentials

Use a final five-part check: people, documents, medicine, phones, and wallets. Leave enough time that one small family delay does not become an emergency.
