Food
★★★★☆4The food on Navigator of the Seas was good overall, and we especially liked the main dining room.
In fact, one of the things that stood out to us was how much we preferred the main dining room experience compared with some of the buffet meals we've had on other cruise lines.
Royal also did a good job with the omelet station at breakfast. Instead of standing around waiting, they gave you a buzzer when your order was ready. That sounds like a small thing, but little details like that make breakfast on a crowded ship much easier.
The food was not the highlight of the cruise, but it was consistently good enough that we were happy with it.
Service
★★★★½4.5Service was very good throughout the cruise.
We've had a lot of cruises now, and service is one area where we rarely have major complaints. Navigator was no different.
Our room steward was especially helpful during Ollie's birthday and helped make the day feel special.
Those are the moments we remember more than whether someone refilled a glass quickly.
Entertainment
★★★½☆3.5Entertainment was mixed for us.
There were some things we enjoyed, like live music, trivia, and a Brazilian piano player.
But there were also plenty of times when nothing really grabbed us.
The entertainment wasn't bad, but it didn't become a major reason we'd choose Navigator again.
For us, it was more of a ship where we found a few things we liked rather than feeling like there was something we absolutely had to see every night.
Cabin
★★★★½4.5We stayed in a Junior Suite, and that was one of the better parts of the ship for us.
It had plenty of space, good storage, and even a small walk-in closet.
For a family of three, having that extra room made the week much more comfortable.
We don't always book a suite, but this cruise reminded us how much easier a longer family trip can feel when everyone has enough space.
Family activities
★★★★½4.5This was an interesting one for us.
Ollie didn't really connect with the kids club on this sailing.
He felt some of the activities were too structured, and there weren't enough games or things that interested him.
That doesn't necessarily mean the program was bad.
It just wasn't a great fit for him at that age.
He enjoyed other things around the ship, especially hunting for cruise ducks, and ended up finding 28 ducks during the cruise.
That became one of the more memorable parts of the trip for him.
The pool and outdoor areas were fine, but the weather made a big difference.
Several sea days were cold and windy, including one around 69°F.
That taught us another lesson: just because you're going to Mexico doesn't mean every day is going to feel tropical.
We didn't pack enough cool-weather clothes, and that limited how much time we wanted to spend outside.
So while the deck areas themselves were okay, the conditions meant they didn't play a huge role in the cruise for us.
Ship condition
★★★½☆3.5Navigator of the Seas was a nice ship overall, but it showed its age in a few places.
The biggest issue happened near the end of the cruise.
We had noticed fans in the hallway drying sections of carpet, which made us think there had been some kind of plumbing or water issue nearby.
Then our cabin toilet stopped flushing properly.
I tried flushing it again, and eventually it overflowed and would not stop.
Maintenance and our room steward had to come help, and I felt terrible that our steward ended up having to deal with the mess.
That experience definitely affected how we remembered the ship.
The ship itself was generally fine, but when something like that happens, it is hard not to associate it with the cruise.
Value
★★★★☆4Navigator offered decent value for what we paid, especially with the Junior Suite and the West Coast itinerary.
Royal Caribbean is not always the cheapest option, but we felt like there was enough included to make the cruise worthwhile.
That said, after this sailing, we became more interested in trying one of Royal's newer mega-ships.
Navigator gave us a good sense of the traditional Royal Caribbean experience, but we still feel like we haven't experienced the version of Royal that gets most of the attention today.
Overall experience
★★★½☆3.5Navigator of the Seas was a cruise with some really good moments and some very rough ones.
We celebrated Ollie's birthday at sea, stayed in a comfortable Junior Suite, enjoyed good food, found great service, and had one of our favorite excursion days in Puerto Vallarta.
But Mazatlán was a major low point, I got sick afterward, and the overflowing toilet the next morning made the end of the trip feel like a perfect storm of things going wrong.
That's why this cruise became part of our "Three Strikes and You're Out?" Royal Caribbean story.
At the same time, we don't blame everything on Royal Caribbean.
The bad excursion wasn't necessarily the cruise line's fault. Getting sick may have had nothing to do with Royal. Weather affected Cabo and the sea days.
What Royal does own is the condition of the ship and the cabin, and the plumbing problem definitely left a bad impression.
Still, we had enough good experiences that we aren't ready to write Royal Caribbean off.
In fact, this cruise made us even more curious about trying one of their newer mega-ships.
Navigator wasn't our favorite cruise, but it taught us an important lesson: sometimes a cruise can have great moments, bad moments, and still be worth remembering for both.
