Our April 2026 Norwegian Joy cruise mixed memorable snorkeling and lively music with crowded pool decks and a weather-related missed port. It was an enjoyable but imperfect family week, and our journal keeps both sides of that experience. The sailing story explains what worked for us and what we would plan differently.

Spring Break 2026 aboard Norwegian Joy
Norwegian Joy is a big ship, and during Spring Break it definitely felt like one.
There were around 5,000 passengers onboard, and you could feel that crowd in certain areas.
The pool deck was probably the biggest example. On a sea day, I went out around 7 a.m. and people were already claiming chairs. If sleeping in and then casually finding a prime pool chair is your plan, Spring Break on a packed ship probably isn't the best time to try it.
On the other hand, one thing we really liked was the Observation Lounge. When the weather wasn't great or Ollie wanted to be inside, it gave us somewhere comfortable to relax without feeling trapped in the cabin.
Overall, we thought Joy was a nice ship with plenty of places to spend time, but capacity matters. A ship can handle thousands of people and still have certain areas that feel crowded when everyone wants the same thing at the same time.
Spring Break 2026 aboard Norwegian Joy
The food on Norwegian Joy was good overall, but it wasn't the reason we would choose the ship again.
That's generally how we feel about Norwegian. We can always find something we enjoy, and having several different places to eat fits the way our family cruises really well. We especially like having options instead of feeling like every dinner has to happen in the same dining room.
We also tried the steakhouse on this sailing. It was pretty decent, but I wouldn't describe it as an incredible steakhouse experience. To us, it felt more along the lines of a LongHorn Steakhouse or Texas Roadhouse-level meal—good, enjoyable, but not something that would make us book the cruise specifically for it.
The bigger advantage for our family is simply having choices, especially with Ollie being a picky eater.

Entertainment was one of the better parts of this cruise for us, mostly because of the live music.
We kept coming back to Caribbean Feeling, a Colombian group playing around the ship. We danced to them several nights and even caught them again around the pool.
Those are sometimes the entertainment moments we remember more than the big production shows.
We don't necessarily need a huge theater show every night. Give us good live music, somewhere to sit or dance, and a relaxed atmosphere, and we're pretty happy.
Spring Break 2026 aboard Norwegian Joy
Norwegian continues to work pretty well for our family, although Ollie's interests are changing as he gets older.
He spent time at Splash Academy, especially on days when he wasn't interested in being outside. That's useful for us because it gives him something separate to do while Hellen and I can have some time together.
But we've also learned not to judge an entire kids program simply by whether Ollie wants to participate. As he gets older, he's becoming much more selective about what he thinks is fun.
On this cruise, the kids club was useful, but it wasn't the center of his vacation.
Pools & Deck Areas
This was probably one of Joy's weaker areas during a packed Spring Break sailing.
The biggest issue wasn't necessarily the pool itself—it was the demand for chairs.
On sea days, chairs could disappear incredibly early. When I went out around 7 a.m. and people were already reserving them, that told me everything I needed to know.
The weather also didn't cooperate every day. Some days were cooler, windy, or rough enough that spending hours outside wasn't particularly appealing anyway.
So while the outdoor areas were fine, I wouldn't book Joy specifically for an incredible pool-deck experience, especially during a sold-out school-break sailing.
Spring Break 2026 aboard Norwegian Joy
Service was very good, which has been pretty consistent with our experiences on Norwegian.
We've been fortunate that cruise-ship service is rarely something we complain about, and Joy was no different. The crew worked hard, interactions were friendly, and nothing about the service negatively affected our trip.
It's easy to overlook good service because you start expecting it after enough cruises, but the crew is a huge part of why these vacations work as smoothly as they do.
Families who enjoy music and active port days, and who can stay flexible when weather changes the itinerary. Readers who value quiet pool time should pay particular attention to our notes about crowding.
